Wordless Wednesday

Well, unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera when my Wordless Wednesday moment occurred.

So, I’m going to have to go anti-wordless Wednesday and tell you about the moment with words and no picture.

That’s how I roll.

So, yesterday was spent at the ER.

We WERE going to see Ramona and Beezus and we were going to bring one of Monkey Girl’s friends with us.

Suffice it to say, she was excited.

So, she was running out the front door, went to slam the door, but slammed her middle finger instead.

Our front door is some steel or metal.

Not wood.

Not that it would have mattered with the force that she used to slam that door.

Big hunka skin flappin’ around.

Much blood.

Many tears.

I washed it out, wrapped it up, called her friend’s Mom to say we would NOT be by in 5 minutes, and to the ER we went.

The moment occurred when we were back in a room, and the doctor came in.

Monkey Girl was laying on the bed, and the boys were sitting on my lap next to the bed.

As the doctor started poking at her finger, Monkey in the Middle just quietly reached out and gently grabbed her other hand.

She looked over at him and smiled gratefully.

He smiled back.

I cried.

Excellent moment.

Truthful Tuesday

I read a lot of blogs.

That’s not the confession.

Just leading up to it.

Most of the blogs I read are Mommy blogs.

Blogs where the Moms share their daily routines and tell funny stories about their kids and talk about crafts and activities they’ve done with their kids.

When I grow up, I want to be a Mom like these ladies.

They grow spices and herbs in their gardens.

They make lavender cupcakes.

Homemade bread.

They have scented paper in their linen closets.

They have things that they call “linens.”

They make seashell necklaces and ridiculously amazing crafts with their kids.

Me?

I’m lucky if my kids get a bath most days, and when they do, I dry them with towels and they sleep on sheets…not linens…that smell of ShopRite dryer sheets…not scented linen paper.

We make funfetti cupcakes from a box mix, and the boys make butt jokes while we wait for them to bake.

Crafts end up with at least one child completely covered in marker and the other two upset that their glue sticks had dried out.

I know I’m not alone.

I read other Mommy blogs, as well.

Moms who have stories that more closely echo mine.

But, still…

…Somedays, I dream of being a Martha Stewart/Crunchy Granola Mom who does amazing things and then smiles and winks with a little sparkle.

And that’s my truth for today.

You’d Think…

…with all the time my monkeys have spent doing this, this summer…

…you’d think I’d have the greenest grass in town.

And before you say, “Hey, that grass looks pretty green,” let me inform you that they are spraying at the neighbor’s lawn, who needs no help in the green lawn department.

Truth?

As long as we keep getting smiles like the one Monkey Girl is shining, who cares a flying fig about the grass?

Great Dad

There are good dads.

Then, there are great dads.

Real Man falls into the latter category.

He is a great dad.

Throughout the day, the monkeys continually ask when Daddy is coming home.

They know the answer, but they ask anyway.

On Friday, they were particularly missing Real Man, and so they decided to leave messages for him in the driveway.

Included in the general “I love you” messages, they also left a trail for him to follow as he drove up the driveway, and a path for him to walk from his truck to the front door.

He didn’t just follow it.

As he pulled up to the driveway, he knew the monkeys would be watching out the front window.

So, he leaned out the truck window and got this incredulous look on his face, like he absolutely couldn’t believe the unbelievable artwork that decorated the driveway.

He followed the curvy path with his truck.

He parked where it said to park.

He got out and walked the entire length of the driveway again, looking at the artwork…really looking at it.

Then, followed the walking path, as twisty and turn-y as it was.

He came in the house and raved about it all.

Those kids felt so incredibly special.

Took no effort.

Made 3 kids SO happy.

That’s a great Dad.

Grandma’s House

Whenever people are coming to look at the house, the monkeys and I head out of Dodge and go to Grandma’s house.

Grandma’s house is always full of stuff to play with that, if kept at our house, wouldn’t be looked at twice.

However, the mere fact that they are “Grandma’s toys” makes them utterly fun and cool to play with.

For example, we have a piano.

The kids love to play the piano.

But, Grandma has a Clavinova.

Way cooler.

Grandma also has this wooden Noah’s Ark toy that is full of wooden animals.

When I tell you that no one would even look at this toy at our house, I’m not exaggerating.

Of course, at Grandma’s house, you also have Grandpa who will hold up the elephant and say things like, “Oh, I’m just going to put this panda bear right over here,” to which the kids will reply in outrage “Grandpa!!!  It’s an elephant.”

This game can continue for hours.

Grandma’s house also has Grandpa’s ancient Lego set, which is so ancient that they weren’t even called Lego’s but “Block City.”

They are so cool.

I used to spend the majority of my summers at my Grandma’s house in Ohio, and while I was there, hours and hours of my time were spent playing with these building blocks.

Now, they are so old, they barely snap together anymore, but it doesn’t dissuade the kids.

Grandma also has this life-sized black labrador stuffed dog.

Creeps me out a little, but Baby Monkey absolutely thinks it is the coolest.

He also seems to think it’s a horse to be ridden, but what can you do?

Finally, Grandma has awesome games.

Particularly, she has Skunk.

Skunk is a game from my Dad’s childhood that I grew up playing with at my Grandma’s in Ohio.

My Grandma and I would play this dice-rolling game for hours and hours on their screened in porch.

I loved that game so much.

I swore my parents had it.

They swore they didn’t.

They did.

And yes, this is the ORIGINAL game that I played with my Grandma.

The address of that company is so old, it still has the mailing district listed for where exactly in Minneapolis it was located.

Love old stuff.

Needless to say, although we’d love to bring the game home, we’re leaving it at Grandma’s.

I doubt it would remain in such pristine condition at our house.

It’s a great game.

I still maintain, however, that if you brought any one of these toys or games to our house, they would immediately cease to be interesting.

The magic of Grandma’s house.

Toothless Wonder

The kid was cute to begin with.

I mean, let’s be honest.

He’s a cute boy.

But, over the weekend, the tooth came out, the tooth fairy came, and I swear…

…he got cuter.

How can losing a body part actually make someone adorable?

I don’t know, but there it is.

Friday Five

Following the lead of some bloggers who I read, I’ve decided to do a Friday Five today.

The following are five things that you probably didn’t know about me.

You probably really don’t care, either, but there it is.

1.  I am hoping against hope that Monkey in the Middle loses his tooth while I’m at work today.  A slightly wiggly tooth I can deal with.  A wiggly tooth that is barely hanging by a nerve gives me a totally icky feeling in the pit of my stomach and completely creeps me out.  Some mom, huh?

2.  In the spring, I outlined my next three novels.  All that was left to do was fill-in, write some dialogue and background and that would be it.  I made a summer goal of writing for an hour a day. We’re closing in on August and I haven’t written a single word.

3.  I’m thinking about buying a used violin or cello from eBay and teaching myself to play this fall.  It is the one instrument that I always wanted to learn how to play and never did.

4.  One of my favorite sounds in the world is the sound of a typewriter.  I think if I had a typewriter, I would have written those three novels this summer…correction tape and all.

5.  I am, right now, completely obsessed with Eminem’s new song and just about lose control of the van trying to turn it up every time it comes on the radio.

And there you have it.

Whether you wanted it, or not.

Woke Up to the Sound of Pouring Rain

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 8:36 am

C’mon…a little Skid Row anyone?

Anyone?

Anyone?

Bueller?

Bueller?

Okay…

Anyway.

Real Man and I woke up to the sound of thunder and pouring rain this morning.

Up on top of the mountain (I know, when I say “the mountain” it makes it sound like we live on Walton’s Mountain or something…”Goodnight JimBob, Goodnight Erin”…wow, am I rambling this morning) the thunder is much, much louder than in the lowlands.

Like, it’s cracking on the roof.

So, we were sure that in no time flat, we’d have five people in our bed.

Yet, it kept storming and no one was showing up.

Finally, we realized they had moved into the living room and had set up camp to watch the storm.

Unprecedented.

A storm without smushiness?

We couldn’t even imagine.

And then…

…we missed them.

But, man, were they cute!
