Guess Who Went to Florida? – Part Two

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 6:00 am
I’m a weird mix of spontaneous and planning.
I’m all up for an impromptu road trip where we throw some clothes in a bag, hit the road, and go see the sites of the billboards that look the most interesting, or wherever the Roadside America website tells me I’d love.
But, if I’m planning a trip, I’m planning the &%$* outta that trip.
And over the course of the next month or so, I emptied a bin of holiday decorations that would house the snacks and water for the car and the hotel, booked our hotel in South Carolina on the way down and back, and booked the hotel for Orlando.
Side note: my hotel booking rules for any trip are as such
  1. There must be free breakfast
  2. There must be an indoor pool (if we are traveling north) or an outdoor pool (if we are traveling south)
  3. The WiFi must be free
I made sure to book at an extended stay hotel so we could have a kitchen and not have to OD on fried food from the park all week.
Monkey Girl, who has inherited my list-making, planning genes, researched the parks and typed up an adorable, hysterical, thorough list of all of the rides and attractions our family must hit, based on each family member.
“Mom will LOVE this one. Tiny will never forgive us if we miss this!” Etc, etc, etc.
We were ready
Except, it’s not really possible to ever really BE READY when there are six of you, and as we packed snacks and water and clothes and games and books and homework, Monkey in the Middle had a sinus infection.
A fourteen year old boy with a sinus infection produces a LOT of snotty tissues, so immediately, extra garbage bags for the car were added to the mix.
We all went to school, that Thursday, and after school, Monkey Girl went to work, and as soon as I got home, I packed the car.
At 5:30, I picked up the girl, Real Man got home, added his suitcase to the car, and off we went
We drove a whole five minutes to McDonald’s, where we picked up dinner to go and started driving.
This first leg of the trip went quickly and we arrived in our Aunt Beth and Uncle Warren’s house. There were hugs, kisses, and exclamations of how tall people had gotten, and the kids (and I) headed to bed and passed out while Real Man shared family pics that had been scanned to a flash drive with his family.
The next morning, we woke up, ate breakfast, chatted for awhile, and then hit the road, once again.
Another one of Amy’s Road Trippin’ Rules is, “When in Rome,” meaning I prefer to hit local restaurants instead of chains. I like to feel the local flavor, and support local business wherever I go.
In fact, the book that started my love of the road (and my love for blogging, as it’s non-fiction writing in the digital era) is a book called “Blue Highways” by William Least Heat Moon, who left everything behind but his car and a map, and traveled the country, taking only the back roads.
He ate at local diners and chatted with the regulars, and often stayed the night in their homes.
Amazing book, people.
But, I digress…
Day two of the drive was uneventful.
Lots of traffic, which extended the trip about two hours, but there was homework getting done, books being read, logic puzzles being solved, and Mama’s music being blasted.
A colleague had lent me a portable DVD player with two screens (because we are also the ONLY FAMILY who has a car that doesn’t have a DVD player) and the kids also watched a few movies as we went.
On a road trip, we try to stop as little as possible, which means there is a lot of potty dancing in the car, but we seem to make it work.
At one point, I couldn’t hold it any longer and pulled off at a local gas station.
Side note: I’m not sure how I do it, but I seem to have a tendency to find the filthiest bathrooms in the country when I’m on the road.
And as we all reconvened in the car after one such potty break, we discovered that one of us had their phone fall out of their pocket into the toilet.
Post-pee.
So, I immediately went into Mama-mode, found the closest convenient store (an interesting, barely lit Mom and Pop operation) where I bought Ziploc bags and rice.
The phone stayed in the rice for two days and came out working just fine. This is life hack that works, folks.
Back to food…when we got to Florence, South Carolina, I looked around for local fare, but the hotel was right off of 95, and the result was that it was all chains.
We decided to hit a Ruby Tuesday’s simply because it was possible to get a vegetable and possibly some fruit there, as opposed to the chains.
In we went and were greeted by our lovely waitress who immediately began to take our orders in her thick, southern accent.
It’s at this point that I need to remind long time readers about one of my very first posts on this blog. (Found here)
In 2009, when we took the three monkeys to Topsail Island, NC, we ate at a Waffle House after driving all night.
We were all a little punchy and when the waitress arrived at the table and asked if we wanted bacon with our eggs and pancakes, Baby Monkey said (right in front of her) “Mama…why she say BAYcon?” Which sent us all into hysterics.
That story has been repeated so many times in our home, that when the Ruby Tuesdays waitress began to take our orders, the kids all began to giggle, and when she walked away, Tiny, who wasn’t even a twinkle in my eye at the time of the NC trip said “Why’d she say BAYcon?”
And then we waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Our food took forever, and when it arrived, it was not particularly appetizing.
But we were starving. We had snacked through lunch out of the food bin, so we wouldn’t have to stop, and ate every bite of every thing that was placed in front of us.
So, of course, we all ordered dessert.
And then waited.
Again.
After (no lie) 20 minutes, my dessert came out, but the rest needed to still wait. For their ICE CREAM. Our guess was someone was running to the Piggly Wiggly to pick up some more.
Then it finally arrived, we ate and hit the hotel.
The Disney channel was showing Zombies (which I have been waiting to see) and everyone watched from their beds or fold-out couches, except for me, who feel immediately fast asleep.
The next day when we woke up, we began to suspect that the waitress had heard us giggling about the bacon story and thought we were making fun of her accent, and had told the kitchen staff to add a little special something to our meals, because no one was feeling very well.
Particularly Real Man and Baby Monkey.
This leg of the trip was slated to take six and a half hours.
Without going into too much detail, I will tell you that this leg of the trip actually took about ten hours.
In addition to traffic, we stopped at approximately every other exit for someone to hit the bathroom, and stopped at yet another convenient store so that Baby Monkey had baggies to vomit in.
Which he did.
For Ten. Straight. Hours.
We got to the hotel, finally, blessedly, and were ready to collapse, but some of us were hungry.
So, forgoing local fare, we had Papa John’s deliver some pizza and four of us ate and two of us went to sleep.
But people, we had made it.

NJ to NC

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 6:09 pm

So, this year, we got a great deal on beach house in North Carolina.  Our vacations have always been limited to the Jersey Shore, so when we saw how reasonable the price was, we knew we had to go for it.

Our original plan was to put the kids to bed, pack the car, and sleep until 3 am.  Then, we were going to wake up, carefully carry the kids from their beds to the car, sure not to wake them, and start driving.

By the time Friday night rolled around, however, we realized that we were definitely not going to be up for driving ten hours after sleeping for a few, so we modified our plan.  Now, we decided, we would put the kids to bed, but we would stay up, then at midnight, we’d carefully carry the kids from their beds to the car, sure not to wake them, and start driving.  Better plan.  However, as always happens, life had another plan.

We put the kids to bed at 9:00.  (On the weekends, they all have sleepovers in Monkey Girl’s room.  They can stay up until 9:00, watch movies in the basement, and have popcorn.)  Real Man and I packed the car, and sat down to watch some television.  Then the visits began.

9:10 – Monkey Girl comes down to say she can’t sleep because she is so excited.  We tell her to go back to bed because she’s going to keep her brothers up.

9:20 – Baby Monkey comes down to say he can’t sleep because he is so excited.  We tell him to go back to bed because he’s going to keep his brother and sister up.

9:30 – Monkey in the Middle comes down to say he can’t sleep because he is so excited.  We tell him to go back to bed because he’s going to keep his brother and sister up.

And so it goes until 10:30, when Real Man and I looked at each other and said, “Let’s go.”

So, we packed the kids in the car, snuggled tight in their pillows and blankets, and off we went.

We figured that, certainly, they’d all be asleep within the hour.  Oh no…they were up and up and up and up.  Baby Monkey was the last to fall asleep at 1:15 am.

With the new quiet in the car, Real Man and I knew we had to do something to stay awake.  So, we started scanning the radio stations.  Friday night is 80’s night, pretty much everywhere, apparently, and so we had a great time singing along with some of our 80’s favorites.  Real Man almost ran off the road several times as I regaled him with my version of the lyrics to many of our favorite songs.

Example:  Flashdance.  You know when she sings “Take your passion and make it happen?”  Yeah, I always thought it was “Take your pants down and make it happen.”  Growing up, I thought it was a dirty, dirty song.  Turns out, not so much.

When Irene Cara sings out “Being’s believing,” I thought it was “Beans believing.”  It didn’t make any sense.  Maybe there were some sentient beans out there in the welding world where Jennifer Beals was working and they were believing in her talent.  I don’t know.  Still, it worked for me.

There were others, but I’d like to maintain my dignity awhile longer.

So, we kept driving.  We were really surprised by the amount of traffic on the road at 3 am.  I mean, where were these people going?  Who, in their right mind, would be driving through Maryland at 3 am???

There were some interesting street names we passed on our way.  My favorite was Backlick Road.  How does that not sound like a comeon when someone asks you where you live?  “Backlick Road, baby… come on by.”  Ick.

I started to fade and Real Man was anxiously trying to engage me in conversation, when Angel Eyes by the Jeff Healey Band came on.  LOVE that song.  So, that woke me right up, particularly when it was followed by the Hooters with And We Danced.  Those kids slept through Real Man and I singing some of these songs at the top of our lungs.  Or, maybe they were just pretending to sleep, embarassed that passing cars might think they were actually with us.

One of my new favorite songs I’m Your’s by Jason Mraz was played approximately 14 times on our 10 hour trip.  That made me happy.  By time number 4, I don’t think it was making anyone else happy.

Around 4 am, we decided to switch drivers, and I took over.  I love driving Real Man’s truck, but I’m always a little overwhelmed with it.  He drives a Ford Expedition, and next to that, my Dodge Caravan Minivan is like a Smart Car.  I’m queen of the road in that Expedition, but I can never quite tell if I’m driving in the lines.  I mean, my God, I’m fifty feet above the road in that thing.  Who can tell where they are?

At 4:52 am, I had a complete out of body experience.  At 4:52 am, we had 452 miles to go, according to Real Man’s GPS.  Trust me, at 4:52 am, that was the absolute coolest thing I had ever seen.

So, while Real Man had been driving, he had mentioned that some of the stuff in the back of the truck was positioned so that, in the dark, it looked like Yoda.  I looked back, from the passenger seat, and didn’t see it.  From the drivers seat, it was uncanny.  Our sheets and pillows were Yoda.  So, around 5:00 am, we started to entertain ourselves talking like Yoda.  “Getting close, we are,” and “Sustenance we need.”   Again, very funny at 5 am after driving all night.

At 5:11 am, we passed into North Carolina and at that point, the music moved to ballads of the 80’s.  We were rocking out to Missing You by Tom Waite and Making Love Out of Nothing At All by Air Supply.  There were many, many more, but again, to preserve our integrity, I don’t think I’ll go through the full list.

By 7:17 am, we needed gas…badly.  So, we stopped at a gas station, and as we opened the doors, we were greeted with some lovely Frank Sinatra-type music blasting from speakers.  We began our fill-up to The Wee Small Hours of the Morning and finished up with Three Coins in the Fountain.  It was the most melodic fill-up I’ve ever experienced.  At this point, the kids were up and were sure we were going to get in trouble for touching the gas pumps.  In NJ, there is no self-service.  It’s actually illegal, if I remember correctly.  So, this is something the kids have never seen before.  Not to worry, though…we pump a mean tank of gas.

We got back in the car, and were greeted with Drew Talks which is another favorite of mine.   At this point, Baby Monkey started in with “I’m staaaaaaaaaarving,” and so we decided to stop for breakfast.  We saw a sign for a Waffle House, and thought, ‘Waffle House…sounds like a good breakfast place.’

So, we pull in.  We should have known there would be a problem as soon as we approached the restaurant and saw the windows streaming with condensation, as if there had been a summer storm.  But, at this point, we’d been up for a little more than 24 hours, and we weren’t quite thinking straight.

We went in.  It was 30 degrees in that restaurant.  We tried to find a booth that wasn’t directly under a vent, but when we looked up, we saw that just about every ceiling tile was a vent.  This gave Real Man and I a case of the No-Sleep-Giggles.  Then, we sat down.  There was no table or booth big enough to accommodate all 5 of us, so I smushed with the boys on my side and Real Man and Monkey Girl smushed on the other.  The waitress came over and took our order.

When she asked, in her very pronounced southern accent, if we wanted bacon with our eggs, Baby Monkey said, in his loudest voice, “Mama, why’d she say baaaaycon?  Why’d she say baaaaaycon?”  I started to try to shush him, but I made the mistake of looking at Real Man who was shaking with laughter, and I started laughing as well, while shooting Baby Monkey the sternest look I could manage at that point.  The waitress was quite gracious, realizing, I think, that we were way out of our element.

It’s entirely possible that at this point, we looked like this:

goof

It was at this point that Baby Monkey started in with his daily round of questions.  He began with asking if syrup was made out of orange juice, and finished up with asking something about toilet paper.  It’s a wonder Real Man and I were able to eat anything, as we couldn’t stop with the sleep-deprived laughter.  We must have looked like two insane people, and I’m surprised none of the other customers took the kids and refused to let us drive anywhere with them.

However, we got back in the car, drove away, and about an hour later, arrived at our destination.  It was a beautiful day, so we hit the beach as soon as we unpacked.  We were dragging, and when the kids went to bed, we went to bed, but it was a great trip. 🙂

Some Days You’re the Windshield…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 6:00 am

Monkey Girl had a field trip on Wednesday.

She was going to the county library with her Quest class, and she was presenting a resort that her group had created in a small business competition.

She was CEO of her group and so she had her morning all planned.

She’d get up early, take her shower, I would do her hair, she’d practice her presentation, go through the slides one more time, as well as the business proposal.

She was prepared.

Wednesday morning rolls around, and I was in the middle of a lovely dream when I hear a furious, albeit sleepy, voice roaring “What the heck is going on around here???  It’s 6:50!!!”

We normally leave the house at 7:00.

She has an alarm clock, but Real Man sets our clock early for when he gets up and runs, and then I get up and go wake her up and we all move through our morning routine.

Except for the one and only time Real Man forgot to set the alarm.

Which was Tuesday night.

You’ve never seen two people jump out of bed so fast, and let me tell you, if there was a speed-braiding contest, I would have taken home the gold.

There were no showers, there was no practicing of the presentation.

What there was, was the fastest dressing you’ve ever seen, followed by the fastest baby change in history, the quickest making of sandwiches and packing of lunchboxes, the speediest toasting of waffles that were swallowed almost whole in the car, a drop off at daycare so fast that Tiny barely had time to realize what was happening, and a Mom and a girl getting to school, amazingly, at their normal time.

We walked in, took a minute and regained our composure.

I explained to Monkey Girl that some days you are the windshield, and some days you are the bug.

But, even when you are the bug, you can choose to get out of the way of the wipers before you get smeared across the glass.

Because you can’t control everything that happens to you, but you can certainly control how you deal with what you are given.

New Year, New Me 2013

April 16, 7:41 pm

I didn’t tackle my closet, but Monkey Girl and I hit her closet and dresser and donated a garden-sized trash bag full of clothes she has outgrown to the clothing bank at our church.

That felt good on many, many fronts.

April 13, 10:31 am

So, the guy sold the van, and that is good news.

Ridiculously good news.

I can completely cross that one off my list.

I have been hitting the treadmill at least twice a week and I am aiming to go for more.  Working on it.

I’m still only averaging around 150 readers a day on the blog, but I’m up to 162 followers on FB.

Hard to know which is more important, sometimes, and it really depends on who you ask.

April 1, 6:00 am

Over Spring Break, we got rid of the van!

We use a dealer who came and picked it up and will sell it for us.

I am SO glad that van is out of the driveway and out of our hands!

February 3, 9:34 am

I’m done with the entire Beautiful Creatures series and I really enjoyed it.  Now I’m reading The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks.

I’ve been able to get on the treadmill twice in the past two days, and am hoping to get there today.

I’ve pulled out my outlines for three novels, and am going to get started on those.

I sold another item on eBay, so that’s also good news.

January 27, 8:27 pm

I’m almost done with Beautiful Darkness and Real Man is currently printing out the shipping label for an item that sold on eBay today.

We went over our grocery budget for the month by $22.67, so in February, I gotta work harder…particularly because we have 5 birthdays to celebrate in February.  That’s 5 special birthday dinners for 8 or 9 people, so it’s gonna cost me!

January 25, 9:22 pm

Aside from finishing XO and then reading and finishing Beautiful Creatures I really haven’t made much progress with my Twenty Wishes for 2013 this week.

I lost four pounds with the stomach virus, but gained three of them right back once I was feeling better, so that’s basically a wash.

I did sell one item on eBay and have another that ends tomorrow which has quite a few bids, so that’s going okay.

I snuck in some time for the piano earlier in the week and really enjoyed it.

Other than that, it’s been go, go, go at work and go, go, go at home and I haven’t really taken much time to even begin to think about myself, so I’m hoping to do better next week.

January 20, 11:21 am

I finished Stolen Prey and am onto XO by Jeffrey Deaver.

I’ve had a viral infection and the sinus infection is back, so I haven’t been exercising.  I guess the good news is that I’m not eating anything besides crackers and ginger ale.  It’s all in the perspective. 🙂

I’m about to walk into the office and make a bit of a dent in there, so I’m feeling good about that.

January 13, 6:23 pm

I was able to finish my next book and download two more today, so I’m onto Stolen Prey by John Sandford.

I was also able to get on the treadmill for awhile, but it was a very short while, due to Tiny’s intolerance of anything that takes my attention away from him.

Yesterday, I completely re-organized the foyer closet, and that felt great, and it feels so much more functional now, and we can open it without fear of things falling down on us.  That’s a good thing.

I also shipped out an eBay sale and listed something else, so I am well on my way with that goal.

January 12, 1:32 pm

I’ve been staying organized at home, staying under my WW points, and have been carving out bits of time, here and there to read and play the piano, so I’m feeling pretty good about things.

I’m about to head to the basement to meet up with Jillian Michaels and my Biggest Loser Kinect game and get in some sweat time.

Today, I did the grocery shopping and feel like I did pretty well there, as well.

I’d always like to spend less, but until they start making coupons for meat, poultry, veggies and fruit, we’re always going to be a little screwed on the grocery bill.

I already posted how I did in the grocery challenge thread at the Frugal Village, but I figured I might as well add it here, as well, for those of you who are interested:

Okay, I did a great, big shop today and took advantage of the CanCan sale. I would have liked to have done better, but I did some stocking up. Here goes:

I didn’t need the diapers right now, but they were on sale and I had the coupon, so I have them when I need them and can send half of the box to daycare. This should last me through the end of February.

Also, I stocked up on the cans of corn, the jelly, and the ground beef. Great prices for those items, as well as the Special K, which is what RealMan eats for breakfast every morning.

Next week should be a lighter shop since I got so much this week, although we’ll see what the CanCan deals are for next week before I decide.

January 9, 5:16 pm

I got home from work and play practice today and decided it was time to exercise.

However, the three big kids were at CCD, so it was just me and Tiny, who is not a fan of my use of the Kinect.

He does, however, seem to tolerate the Wii, so I did 20 minutes of Wii Fit Plus Island Cycling.

He had enough and I needed to stop before I was done, but based on where I was on the course, and the fact that I had already finished half of the course, I’m going to say I ran 6 miles.

I don’t feel exhausted afterward, which tells me that I’m ready to really be pushing myself more.

I just have to find the time.

On another “Better Health” note, I’ve been staying under my WW points, which is good.

“Better Home” feels like I’m making progress, as well.  Things are just a bit more organized and are staying that way.

January 8, 7:44 am

Yesterday, if you read today’s blog, you’ll see that I took some time for myself.  Better Health, for sure.

I’ve also been good about remembering to take my meds, which is something I can forget to do, so my infections are going away, which is a very good thing.  Better Health, again.

I was able to use some of my time for me to prep for today, so this morning, there was no rushing around to get dinner going, etc.  Better Home and happy me. 🙂

Oh, and finally, I’ve remembered to add vegetables to each of our dinners, each night and the kids have been snacking on cut up red peppers after school.  That’s on my Twenty Wishes!

January 7, 10:44 am

On the 6th, I got up for a bit and did a half-hour of Just Dance 4 with Monkey Girl.  It was fun and exhausting.

I continued to eat well and stayed below my points, and I also was able to play the piano for a short while, and started reading The Racketeer by John Grisham.

I also listed something else on eBay to get me closer to that goal.

Finally, I cleaned up the piles in the kitchen and did away with quite a few of them to prepare for Monkey Girl’s girl scout meeting, which we held at the house.  Definitely Better Home!

January 5, 1:14 pm

As of last night, I had made $131.13 in my PayPal account through selling items.

This gets me closer to my $1,000 goal for 2013.

As a reminder, my hope is to earn $1,000 selling things on eBay and then use that money for Christmas gifts next year.

Not Better Health or Better Home, but it certainly goes toward my Twenty Wishes in 2013.

I did go to the doctor, yesterday morning, however, because I feel like I was hit by a truck, then the guy looked in his rearview mirror and said, “Wait!  She’s not dead yet!” and backed up over me.

Sinus infection and something funky in my lungs, so now I’m on a strong antibiotic and steroids.  Good times.

However, I guess that’s working toward Better Health, because I think it’s been sneaking up on me for awhile and I’ve been ignoring it.

As for today, I was able to spend some time playing the piano, which goes toward my 20 Wishes for 2013, so I’m happy for that.

January 3, 2013 5:14 pm

It’s my birthday, so, let’s be honest.

I’m not doing Better Health or Better Home today.

I went to work and am going to my parents house for dinner where I am going to eat copious amount of my Mom’s spaghetti with meat sauce and peanut butter chocolate ice cream.

Why?

Cuz it’s my birthday.

I will say I ate well all day and had no sugar so that I could indulge tonight, but there was no exercise to be seen.

January 2, 2013 8:37 pm

As I worked all day and was barely home, I had no time to work on Better Home, however, I did work on Better Health.

No exercise today. 🙁

Back to school after a long break and I just knew that waking up early wasn’t going to do it.

However, no soda, no sugar.

Stayed under my Weight Watchers points.

Feeling good.

January 1, 2013 1:41 pm

So, today I worked on Better Health.

I signed up for Weight Watchers online for three months.

I did 30 minutes of The Biggest Loser for the Kinect.

It’s tough.

It’s made tougher by the fact that Tiny kept coming into the sensor path, so the sensor kept thinking I wasn’t doing the poses correctly.

However, I kept going and after 30 minutes, I felt my muscles were well worked.

January 1, 2013 7:44 am

As I stated in my general post today, I am breaking down my goals for 2013 into two, broad categories: Better Health, Better Home.

My plan for today is to do a little something in both of these areas.

Today is the day that I cut out soda and work very hard to cut out all refined sugar from my diet.

I will also begin my exercise regimen today.

Today is also the day that I plan to clear out the closet in the laundry room.

It is at a point where it is completely non-functional and it isn’t working for me anymore.

I’m also going to cut and paste my 20 Wishes for 2013 list here so I can come back to it as a reference point throughout the year and make updates as necessary.

So, it’s 7:44 am on January 1, 2013 and it all starts now!

20 Wishes for 2013

1. Take the family to DisneyWorld. We’ve been talking about doing this for quite awhile and just haven’t done it. I want this to be the year.
2. Get a playset for the backyard. I want the kids to play outside more, and I know my kids and a playset would definitely do it.
3. Get weight down by 9 pounds AND KEEP IT THERE. Goal weight: 125
4. Incorporate more vegetables into the family diet.
5. Make $1,000 by selling on eBay.
6. Get blog readership to 200 per day average.
7. Make home office neat, organized, and functional.
8. Read 50 books (and keep track!)
9. Get pictures hung. We’ve been here a year and a half and haven’t hung up our pictures yet. Drives me nuts.
10. Have family photo taken.
11. Really go through my closet and be ruthless with getting rid of what I don’t wear.
12. Play piano at least once a week. I teach piano lessons, so I am always at the piano, but I rarely carve out the time to play for myself. I went to college as a vocal and piano performance major and I feel like I’m neglecting that part of myself.
13. Only eat out once a week, if at all.
14. Write in my journal more often. I only wrote in it twice in 2012, so anything would be an improvement! I think keeping the blog up every day takes it’s place, but they have different purposes and I don’t want to neglect my journal writing.
15. Really learn about self-publishing to see if it is an option for my novel.
16. Re-edit my novel.
17. Shred and pare down all of our files.
18. Sell the van.
19. Take more pictures.
20. Be outside more.
