What I Did Today

Otherwise known as: When the Doctor Says to Be Still and Rest, She Means It

So, I’m home recovering today, and after everyone left the house, I was feeling like a fraction of my former self, which, to me, meant that I should go ahead and get things done.

I’m not a good sitter.

Also, the next few discs of Battlestar Galactica aren’t arriving until tomorrow.

So, I pulled out the fabric and decided to get sewing.

Here’s my machine (thank you, Bonnie!).  I got her threaded up and was ready to go!

I had a hard time deciding what to do, but knew it would be something relatively small.

I went with cash budget envelopes.

Currently, I have bank envelopes that I use to stash cash for things we save up for, like vacations, birthdays and Christmas, and our Disney Fund.  (No plans to go to Disney, but I’m saving so when it’s time, we’re prepared!)

I had seen some cute fabric cash envelopes online, and thought it might be a good first project.

I think they came out pretty well!

Not too ambitious, but just right for today.

Then, I figured I better get to work with Monkey Girl’s birthday cake, as the big day is tomorrow.

While I was baking the cake, I decided to make some chocolate chip cookies, as well.

After that, I was exhausted.

Like, couldn’t keep my eyes open exhausted.

So, I went to bed and slept for three hours.

When I woke up, I felt like I had been hit by a truck.

More specifically, I felt like my nose had been hit by a truck, and I suddenly realized that this recovery is going to be a lot like c-section recovery.

Even though I felt fine to do the stairs in the moment when recovering from the c-sections, a few hours later, I was feeling the effects.

Same thing here, although I do find it hard to see the connection between sewing and baking and my nose.

Can’t argue the pain, though.

So, I got a lot done today, but tomorrow, I’ll follow doctors orders and just rest.

Eyes on the prize.

A little rest now will equal feeling fabulous later on.

Although, maybe a little sewing tomorrow wouldn’t be TERRIBLE!

Possibilities

I pulled out the sewing machine this morning, pulled out all of my fabric, and now am just looking at it, trying to figure out what to do with it.

So, I’m faced with possibilities, but am not even sure where to start.

I’ve been checking out all these awesome blogs where people are making the coolest crafts, but I’m not quite sure where to start.

Part of it is, I’m sure, because I’m not really steady on the sewing machine, but I’m committed to doing this on the machine since I have it out.

I’m thinking I want to make something for Monkey Girl.

Hmmm…

I’ve got time.  I’m not at work today, as I continue to recover, and I’m trying to be relatively still, as it still hurts a lot when I move my face.

Maybe today I’ll just consider the possibilities and tomorrow I can sew.

We’ll see.

Any suggestions?

My Girl, the Seamstress

Monkey Girl had a Girl Scout sewing class today.

It was Sewing II, but she wasn’t a part of this troop for the Sewing I class, so they weren’t going to let her participate because she wasn’t there for the session where they learned how to use the machines.

In the end, though, they let her participate.

All by herself, she  made this skirt, that can double as a tube top.

She sewed in the elastic and the ribbon, sewed the seam…

Again, she did it all.

I’m so proud of her!

Guess there’s no excuse not to bust out that new sewing machine and get this sewing show on the road!!!

Feeling Real Crafty

Fall always sparks my creativity.

It is my favorite season and I am definitely happiest in fall.

To me, autumn is a time of nesting and getting the home prepared for the long winter ahead.  Must be my grandmothers farmer genes running through me.

Anyway, as I was home with Baby Monkey today, while we snuggled watching the Disney Channel, I pulled out my knitting needles and started knitting Monkey Girl a scarf for Christmas.  I made one for my Mom last year and Monkey Girl was envious.  So, I found some neat rainbow yarn and decided to knit one for her this year.  However, I just never started it.  So, today, I began.

Monkey Girl is a creative little monkey, herself.  Last year, while I was making a lap quilt for my Mother (I did a lot of homemade gifts last year), Monkey Girl created a quilt for her American Girl doll.

I think she did a GREAT job!  I was really proud of her.

She’s also sewn her own pincushion and a pillow for her doll to go with the quilt.  This summer she started a quilt for herself.  She hasn’t picked it up in awhile, but I guarantee that tonight when I start working on a project of my own (can’t say what…that person might read this blog) that she’ll ask to get it out and start working on it again.

Monkey girl has also made her own greeting cards from a kit she bought awhile ago.

Here are a few:

She has long since paid herself back for the kit and still has cards to sell.  She wants to set up a card stand at the end of the driveway one of these weekends.  Fine with me.  My little entrepreneur.

So, I’ve definitely got the autumn nesting, crafty bug.  Although I miss her like crazy when she goes to bed, I can’t wait until she goes to sleep so I can keep knitting.  I don’t care if I look like a granny, sitting and knitting while I watch tv.  It’s one of life’s simple pleasures for me.
