Field Trip

Yesterday, Real Man took the day off and we took the monkeys to the Liberty Science Center.

We might as well have been taking them to Disney.

Okay, maybe that’s a BIT of an exaggeration, but they were excited.

They love this place.

Baby Monkey was entranced with the crane.

And, once he realized there was construction worker gear to put on…forget it.

Monkey in Middle loved anything that resembled a video game.

(Yes, that is Monkey in the Middle wearing his sisters pink sweatshirt.  Deal with it.)

And, Monkey Girl?

She just wanted to get sneezed on.

Tiny was kind enough to sleep through the whole thing.

So, our big Spring Break trip is over, and while it might not be exciting by some standards, it’s exactly what my monkeys wanted!

Spring Break!

It’s Spring Break and I’m just feeling like a pig in mud over here.

I’ve got all my babies home with me for the week!

It seems like everyone in our small town has packed up and headed to Florida.

I know at least 7 families who are there as I type.

We’ve never gone anywhere for Spring Break, but we are just looking forward to a week together.

Real Man has to work, obviously, but we might drive in and meet him for lunch one or two days.

We’ll hit storytime at the library (which is something Tiny and Baby and I have been doing) one day.

If the rain stays away, we’ll go for walks to the park.

We already have a pile of books from last weeks trip to the library that we’ve been making our way through.

Yet, the thing I’m looking the most forward to is being able to get a kiss or a hug or a snuggle whenever I darn well want one!

Five Question Friday!

1. Have you ever had surgery?
I have.
6 times, although I’m not sure two of them really count.
The first two were to remove dysplastic nevi from my skin.  Too many hours in the sun with too little protection led to some scary moles that needed to be removed.
After that, I had 3 c-sections which produced three wonderful babies!
Then, I had surgery on my neck to remove a lymph node which had grown to epic proportions.  Turns out, I have something called Kikuchi Fujimoto disease.  Go figure.
Finally, I had my last c-section and had a tubal ligation at the same time.  This last surgery produced my sweet, little Tiny Monkey.
So, yes, I’ve had surgeries, but the majority have been for fantabulous reasons, and the others, not really such a big deal.

2. Ever ride in an ambulance?
Nope, and I hope I never have to.

3. How are you in a medical emergency? Panicked? Calm?
Calm.  Mainly because everyone else is panicking (not Real Man, but kids, parents, etc.) and so the crazier they get, the calmer I get.
Someone’s gotta keep a cool head!

4. Do you have a garden? Flowers or veggies?
Perhaps I haven’t mentioned my brown thumb?
The answer is a resounding NO.

5. When did you move out of your parents house?
When I was 23.
Graduated college at 22.
Came home for awhile.
Decided to move out for everyone’s sake.
It was a hard adjustment to move back after living on my own, 9 hours away (6 if I was driving) for 4 years.
I moved into a large house with two roommates, Nita and Mike.  Not sure where either of them are today, but I lived there until Real Man and I got married when I was 26.  Loved it.
Well, except for the arguments over who would mow the lawn, or Mike’s dirty dishes in the sink, or…okay, maybe LOVED isn’t the right word.  Still, I think everyone should live “on their own” for awhile.
That’s my wisdom for the day.

Family Dinner

Last night’s dinner:  Meatloaf, corn, biscuits, salad, cut up red peppers (because the monkeys don’t like salad, but they love red peppers!)

Let me preface this by saying I am neither someone who enjoys cooking, nor am I someone who excels at cooking.

I’m also not someone who has an inordinate amount of money to spend on the groceries.

For March, we spent an average of $109 a week on groceries (including diapers, paper products, toiletries, and all food).

(Pardon the plug for frugal living…yeah to living frugally!)

So, we aren’t eating gourmet meals over here, but they are from scratch and not out of a box.

However, cook a hot meal for my family every night, I do.

Channeling a little Yoda, there.

Anyway, if there is one thing that I hold strong to, it is the importance of eating together as a family.

Every night.

I realize that many families aren’t able to do this, due to the schedules of one or both parents.

When kids get to be teens, they may be in and out due to their own scheduling conflicts.

However, it is the one thing that I will always make sure we make our best effort to have.

It’s just a time where we can all check in with each other.

Talk about our days.

See what’s coming up during the next few days.

Problem solve each others issues.

Enjoy each other.

My monkeys are young, so while we do spend our dinner time doing all of the above, we also spend a majority of dinner playing “I Spy” or trying to trick each other into saying the number 5 (because, apparently, if you say “5” you are disqualified.  Disqualified from what, we have yet to determine, but it’s always a good time.)

It is, hands down, my favorite part of the day.

And, yes…there are nights when Monkey in the Middle has basketball or Monkey Girl has to get ready for Girl Scouts, and so family dinner is cut short, but I’d say that 6 out of 7 nights of the week, we sit down together and enjoy.

It’s my #1 recommendation for a happy family.

My #2 recommendation for a happy family is that after dinner, Mommy goes and puts up her feet and everyone else does the dishes.

Public Service Announcement for the Day

I received an e-mail from my friend, Carla, a few days ago.

In it, there was a link to this interactive map quiz of the Middle East.

I took it.

I was shamed.

I think it is so important that we are not only up on current events, but that we are aware of exactly where these things are happening.

I actually take the quiz every day, now, in an effort to practice what I preach.

And, when I go back to school in May, you can be sure my students will be taking the quiz.

Give it a shot.

You don’t have to tell us how you did.

Perspective

I feel like time is passing too quickly.

And I realize it is so cliche to say that, but I can’t help but hear this constant tick, tick, tick in the back of my mind.

Perhaps it’s because I have to return to work at the end of May.

Perhaps it’s because I know this is my last monkey.

I don’t really know, but things seem to be happening in fast forward these days.

How is it that my days being home are going more quickly than my days full of work?

Tiny Monkey has already outgrown his 0-3 month clothes.

I knew he wouldn’t fit in newborn stuff.

None of my kids ever did.

But 0-3 months?

I should have had a little more time with them!

He outgrew them at 3 weeks.

I feel like he’s gotten so much bigger, so fast.

But, then I look at this picture and I realize just how tiny he still is.

And I can breathe again.

1. Have you ever testified in court? For what?
Nope.  Hoping never to have to!

2. Do you still have your wedding dress?
Yep!  In a special box at my parents house.

3. Is there a special place you like to go when you’re happy, sad, stressed, etc.?
Chocolate-ville.

4. If you have kids, do they sleep with you? If you don’t have kids…will you let your kids sleep with you when/if you have them?
Only when they have had a bad dream, want an early morning snuggle, or if they are sick.

5. Do you watch late night TV?
Didn’t used to, but if Tiny Monkey is up and wanting to be fed, then I watch!
