I find it funny how daily habits can change, based on where you are.

At the beach, I go for at least two major walks a day.

First thing in the morning, I take whoever is up and head out, and then, later in the afternoon, I find some reason to walk to a faraway store.

I can’t even fathom a day without these walks, and have been known to go, even when it’s raining.

The beach means walking to me, and I feel so healthy and energized when I get these walks in.

At home, however, although I try to walk every day, it just doesn’t have the same lure.

Perhaps it’s because at the beach, there are new things to see that keep the monkeys entertained on the walk.

We pass bakeries and mini-golf courses and general stores with new and exciting toys.

Well, with toys that are just like the toys you could buy at home, but that look new and exciting because they are in a different store.

The air smells like summer and it doesn’t really matter if it’s 90 degrees, the walk is good.

At home, if it’s 90 degrees, it just feels sweaty and hot and the last thing I feel is energized and healthy when walking in that type of weather.

I think it’s also due to the fact that there are places I can actually walk TO at the beach.

We can walk to the bakery for fresh donuts.

We can walk to the WaWa for a gallon of milk.

We can walk to the RiteAid for some sunblock.

At home, I could walk to the closest bakery, but it’s just not the same.

Which goes to what I’ve been saying since I was a kid.

I need a beach house.

It’s a matter of health, really.

Walking to the ice cream store last night, I looked up and saw the late sun streaming through this cloud.

Really nice way to end the day.

Unplugged

The monkeys have spent the majority of this summer unplugged.

Not completely unplugged, but not playing Wii or xBox or even on their DS’s.

We went to the video gameless beach for the week of the 4th of July and came home and packed the Wii and xBox for our move that week, and since we’ve moved in, we realized that the tv where we were going to plug them into in the new house doesn’t support that type of connection.  Haven’t gotten around to fixing that, yet.

The DS chargers were packed in the move and have yet to be uncovered (which is actually making me a bit nervous since I’ve essentially unpacked almost everything at this point.)

What have I found as a result?

A return to creative play.

My boys are once again spies and detectives and cowboys and whatever else they can think of.  Instead of playing Lego Indiana Jones, they have become Indiana Jones and are finding the Crystal Skull in the recesses of the basement.

Now, I’m not one to say video games are the devil.  I actually am a huge proponent of most video games because of the critical thinking they entail, and have been thinking of ways to include gaming in my classroom this year.  Yet, I’m also a proponent of making your own fun, and I’m feeling so satisfied to watch my babies engage in a whole summer of this.

We are, once again, headed to the video gameless beach for 2 weeks.  Yes, there is a television, but at the beach they find so many other things to do, the tv is usually their last resort.

When we return, we’ll probably get it all hooked up again, which isn’t a bad thing, however, after two months of not using it, I am hoping the video games become the third or fourth choice of things to play instead of the automatic go-to.

Things I Love This Morning

I love the way Tiny Monkey grabs my hand while I’m feeding him.  He holds on tight and I am rendered motionless.  Yes, I could easily wrangle myself free to turn the page or change the channel or write a word, but that little grip makes me feel utterly needed, and you couldn’t pay me enough money in the world to let go.

I love the way Baby Monkey plays.  He wears a Halloween costume around the house almost every day and is a total goofball.  As he hopped off of our bed the other morning, after a little good morning snuggle, he hollered back at us over his shoulder, “I’m outta here…Peace out!”  It’s not done to get the laugh, it’s not done to get attention.  At 5, he’s just an inherently cool kid and he makes us laugh.

I love the passion Monkey in the Middle brings to everything, even when that passion is fueling his anxiety about this or that event.  When he loves something, it’s quite a sight to see.  I can’t wait to see what he does in life, because I know he’ll do it 100%, full throttle, and while that may not always be a good thing, it’s his thing and he’s fantastic.

I love Monkey Girl’s mind and intellectual curiosity.  We went to the library the other day to return a bunch of books and they had a summer “Passport to Reading” which was a booklet full of different activities for kids to do, and when you finish, you can get a stamp for your passport and raffle tickets to win prizes.  As soon as we got home, she got started, and despite the fact that both the librarian and I said “You don’t have to do it all at once…it’s meant to be done throughout the summer,” she knocked off about 16 of the 26 activities by the next morning.  She was busy researching and finding information, doing a craft and creating small projects.  I love that excitement for learning in her and I hope it stays with her, always.

Five Question Friday

Got a Tiny Monkey with a viral infection today, so I’m grateful for the quick questions today.
Hope you don’t mind the equally quick responses!
1. Vow renewal ceremonies-yay or nay?
Yay.
Big Yay.
Why not?
Granted, I don’t think it needs to be a second wedding with the 300+ people you had at the first one, but I think about our 20 year anniversary which will be in 7 years and I can’t help but think about how neat it would be to have the monkeys witness their Mom and Dad exchanging vows and getting married all over again.  To see that after all that time, we still choose each other.
Yay.
2. What sound/s annoy you the most?
Whining.
3. If you had to pick, would you have only all boys, or only all girls for kids?
No fair, no fair, no fair.
I’d pick all girls so I could dress them up in pretty little dresses and do their hair and hear their sweet little girl voices.
I’d pick all boys so I could marvel in the way little boys love their Mama’s and watch them play and smell their sweaty heads.
So there.
4. Do you believe in alternative medicine?
I believe in medicine.
I believe that there are many kinds of medicine, other than the kinds you find in a pharmacy.
I know many people who have gotten better with alternative medicines, and whether it was the medicine or the positive thinking behind it, but it worked.
Who am I to argue?
5. Would you take a family members children and raise them if they needed it?
Absolutely.
That’s all there is to say about that.

Today…

I want to walk down this road with my family.

I want to stroll with Real Man while watching the monkeys skip ahead.

I want to listen to the monkeys chatter about seeing this and that.

I want to listen to the leaves crackle under our feet and smell the autumn in the air.

I want to hold Real Man’s hand and feel the weight of Tiny Monkey in my arms as we take it all in.

I want to feel the cool, autumn breeze ruffle my hair and I want to feel the tingle of anticipation of ending our walk with a nice, warm mug of apple cider.

Because as much as I enjoy the summer…

…my heart belongs to autumn.

Around Here…

…when you come downstairs in the morning, you don’t know what you’ll find.

Maybe it’s kids quietly playing games in the basement.

Maybe it’s kids eating breakfast at the kitchen table.

Or maybe, just maybe…

It’s a StormTrooper, in a way too small outfit, and Superman, in a similarly way too small outfit, covered by a Fireman jacket, shooting hoops on the deck.

…and that’s just fine.

Archie Comics.

There.

I said it.

I love Archie Comics.

I will buy every Archie comic they have at every single checkout stand I go through.

I used to have a subscription to Archie comics before I was married.

I would practically assault the mailman on the days the Archie comic was to arrive.

I love them.

I’ve been reading them since I was a kid, and I feel like Archie and the gang are my friends.

Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Reggie.

I love when they sneak in a Josie and the Pussycats comic in the middle.

I bought the newest one while checking out at the Acme today and couldn’t wait for Tiny Monkey to take a nap so I could read it.

Those crazy kids.

I love them.

All.

So much.

Say what you will, but there you have it.

You Had to Do What???

I’ve been doing a lot of internet reading, lately, in the moments when the big monkeys are otherwise occupied, Tiny Monkey is napping, and I don’t feel like I can unpack one more blessed box.

Yesterday’s article was one of the ones that caught my fancy, but this one did, too.

I found it particularly relevant after the monkeys and I were just discussing the whole 4 channel, no remote, rabbit ears type of television that I grew up with.

So, enjoy this list of things your kids may never know about.

Wonder what THEIR kids will never know about!

Acceptable Risk

I’ve always been a huge proponent of, what I call, “Acceptable Risk” with my kids.

I’ve always encouraged them to climb to the top of the highest tree and then figure out how to get down.

To climb to the top of the nearest monkey bars and work their way back.

To slide down the fireman’s pole, to jump into the deep end, to explore, to do what other, more cautious moms might hold their kids back from.

Not because I want them to get hurt, but because I know it’s important to learn how to fall, to figure out the minimally dangerous stuff on their own, so that when the big bad comes around, they have the self-confidence to face it and to make wise decisions.

Doesn’t mean they always take the challenge, but they know that Mommy encourages them to try.

So, I gave a big “Hurrah!” and clapped my hands when I came across this article, yesterday.  Seems like I’m not the only one recognizing that we’ve made things so safe for our kids, they aren’t learning how to take the risks or how to recover from the fall.

I particularly liked the second to last paragraph, but overall, great article.

Enjoy.
