Measuring Stick

Every year, on the monkey’s birthdays, we make them stand, heels against the wall, and we mark their height on our measuring stick.

At first, it was a neat way for Real Man and I to remember how tiny Monkey Girl had once been (although, comparatively, she was never actually ‘tiny’) but once Monkey in the Middle was born, it became a way for us to compare their heights.

Once Baby Monkey was added to the mix, it was an out and out height competition.

Birth.

No question.

Monkey Girl beat them all.

Monkey Girl probably beat all of your babies, too.

She was long.

And big.

9 pounds, 15 ounces of Monkey Girl.

Her bassinette, in the hospital nursery, was next to a set of twins who were about 3 pounds each.

She looked like a seven month old.

It was pretty funny.

Monkey Girl’s measurements are on the right.

Monkey in the Middle is on the left (yes, it would have made more sense to put him in the middle, but we didn’t know he’d be a middle child when he was born…in fact, we had no idea he’d be a middle child until he was two!)

Baby Monkey is the middle measurement.

Age 1.

Monkey Girl retains her lead, but Monkey in the Middle starts to catch up.

Baby Monkey comes in third.

Age 2.

Monkey in the Middle catches up AND surpasses Monkey Girl.

Baby Monkey brings up the rear.

Age 3.

Monkey in the Middle takes a startling, huge lead, and Baby Monkey makes a play for second place!

The race is on.

Age 4.

Monkey in the Middle retains his massive lead, while Monkey Girl and Baby Monkey settle into their respective second and third places, happily.

Age 5.

Obviously, as Baby Monkey just turned 4, we have no data on his age 5 height…yet.

However, I find age 5 to be interesting, as it was in year 4-5 that Monkey in the Middle was in the height of his throwing up phase.

For a little over a year and a half, Monkey in the Middle threw up multiple times per day.

He wasn’t sick.

He just threw up.

It was all mucous, and we had a bajillion tests done.

The poor kid was poked and prodded more than any poor kid should be, but at the end, everything was inconclusive.

My theory is that, even though he had tubes in his ears, he still wasn’t draining properly, and it drained into his stomach which is just gross.

Anyway, he’s generally outgrown it now, unless he is in a runny nose stage, or if a smell really offends him.

Like a McDonald’s restaurant.

Or, if he’s really, really super excited about something.

Like his newest cousin’s christening.

Other than that, he’s fine.

However, as I was saying, I find it interesting that in the height of the vomit-itis, his growth abruptly stopped, and he fell behind in the height chart.

Age 6.

He’s making a comeback!

Ages 7 & 8.

No one to compare her to, but it does demonstrate why we either need a new stick next week, or it’s time to stop measuring Monkey Girl, because she’s clearly outgrown the stick this year, as she turns 9.

In the end, they are all going to tower over me.

I’m 5’5 1/2″.

At the rate they are going, I’m guessing Monkey Girl will hit a statueseque 5’8″, Monkey in the Middle will top out at a long and lanky 6’4″, and Baby Monkey may hit 6’1″.  Baby Monkey is really more of a linebacker, but he is built like his dad, and Real Man is 6’1″.

I’m not a real sentimental chica, yet I do look forward to getting out the measuring stick each year.  I think it’s neat to see, and I have such a hard time believing they were ever this small.

Snuggle Monkey

We thought we were sneaky.

Monkey Girl and Baby Monkey were happily playing away, and so Monkey in the Middle and I looked at each other with sleepy eyes, made our way to the old suede recliner, found a blanket, and curled up.

We didn’t mean to fall asleep.

However, apparently, we did.

Monkey Girl pulled out my camera and caught us.

I. Love. My. Snuggle. Monkey.

Movie Review: The Lightning Thief

So, I surprised Monkey Girl, on Sunday, with a trip to see The Lightning Thief movie.

I asked her to come with me to ShopRite and she grudgingly agreed.

She had her nose in a book in the backseat, and didn’t really pay attention to where we were going, so when we pulled into the theater parking lot, I said, ‘Oh no…I must have made a wrong turn.”

She looked up and a slow smile spread on her face and she said, “Mommy…why are we here?”

I said, ‘Wrong turn, but I guess we could stay and see The Lightning Thief!”

Needless to say, she was thrilled.

We had read the book together, and had been very excited for the movie to come out.

Here is our (combined) review:

The movie was great.  Really, it was.

However, it wasn’t like the book at all.

Main characters were left out.

Adventures were different.

Certain relationships were very different.

Still, a great movie.

We were disappointed because as we read the book, we talked about how we imagined various scenes would go in the movie, but they weren’t all there.

I’m not sure why, except for perhaps in the interests of time.  The truth is, the book would have made a fabulous movie, as it was.

Perhaps they changed it to appeal to a bit of a broader audience.

Not sure.

Still, loved the book, loved the movie.

We’re reading the second in the series, “The Sea of Monsters” now, and are on pins and needles waiting to see how they are possibly going to do that in movie form since they left out many important things in the first one that lead to the second.

If you’ve got the money, spend it on a ticket.  It’s a good time. 🙂

Monkey Girl’s birthday is the 23rd of February.

However, when she was just about to turn 3, I was nine months pregnant with Monkey in the Middle (who, at the time, I guess we would have called Baby Monkey, but that’s just confusing to think about).

I was scheduled for a c-section on February 16th, which was two weeks before my due date.  I figured that I would have her birthday party a few weeks before her birthday, rather than when I was home with the baby, so that none of her birthday attention would be given to the baby.

So, we had the party on Sunday the 15th.

Just family, but since we have such a large family, saying “just” family doesn’t mean it was a small affair.

Everyone had a great time.

Except for me.

Oh, don’t get me wrong…it was fun.

However, at about the time everyone started arriving, I started having contractions.

I decided not to tell anyone and let them progess over the next three hours of the party.  This was the last time anything would be only about Monkey Girl, and I wanted to let her have her moment.

My Mom stayed to help clean up, when it was over, and as she was ready to go, I walked her to the door and said, “If you could run home now, pack your bag, come back and watch Julia tonight, I think we need to get going to the hospital.”

She left, and about five hours and a c-section later, we met our little Monkey in the Middle.

Right from the start, he was a serious baby.

Like, really serious.  Grumpy little face.  Smiles reserved for gas passing and eating.

But, as he grew, that smile started to show on a more regular basis.

I know.  Right?  Heartbreaker!

He bonded with his cousin, the one with whom I call him “Double Trouble.”

I call them Double Trouble, but the truth is, they aren’t trouble.

They just really enjoy each other’s company, and it’s so nice to see.

When they get older, they may become schemers and the “trouble” title may apply, but I guess if you are going to hatch a scheme, might as well be with family, right?

Now, he’s six.

He’s still a very serious guy.

He has a silly side, but the truth is, he’s a serious guy through and through.

He’s a mama’s boy.

No arguing that.

This guy wants his mama, and despite the fact that I encourage his independence at every turn, his mama wants to be with him just as much.

He’s so smart, but hates attention.

He’s notices everything and absorbs every detail in every situation.

He’s very much like his Dad in that regard.

He’s a thinker, a planner, a doer.

He’s sporty and athletic.

He’s also very much like his Mom with his 0-60 temper and his low tolerance for things not being done “just so.”

But he’s mine, all mine and I think he’s wonderful.

I love this guy and am celebrating the heck outta his life today.

Happy Birthday, big boy!

Here’s hoping you are spending the day with those you love the most!

Real Man and I celebrated last night with dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant and seeing “The Wolfman.”

A relaxing, entertaining evening with my guy.

Monkey Girl doesn’t know it yet, but today is the day I’m taking her to see “The Lightning Thief.”  Should be a REALLY good time!

Tonight we celebrate with all of the monkeys by snuggling on the couch and having family movie night.

Enjoy your day!

Can’t Believe They Fit

So, as I’ve mentioned before, the name of the show we’re doing this year is “Back to the ’80’s.”  One of the scenes is a prom scene, and so we’re asking staff and parents to go through their closets, and if they have any prom dresses from the ’80’s, to donate them to the show.

I went through my own closets, and found three prom dresses.

I didn’t actually think I still had them, but my mother must have brought them over at one point.

I thought it might be funny to see how ridiculous I looked in these dresses that I wore as a teenager, and see just how poorly they fit me today, and so I started a little fashion show.

I started with my senior prom dress.

Purple, off the shoulder.  Not quite sure what I was thinking when I bought it.

Unreal.

It fit!

Now, I was excited!

This was the prom dress I wore when I was a sophomore and went to the junior prom with my boyfriend at the time.

Tee-hee!  It fit, too!

I was 15 when I bought this dress.

(At this point, I want to mention that I completely realize my own vanity in this post.  However, I can’t seem to stop myself.  I was very excited by this turn of events.)

This dress, I don’t remember.

I’m pretty sure I wore it to a fraternity formal in college, because it wasn’t a high school dress.

I’m not really surprised that this one fit, because in college I was the queen of eating a full dinner (two helpings) at the dining hall, then going back to my room and around 8, having a pizza delivered and eating the whole thing by myself.

I like my food, and in college, I indulged freely.

But, still, that was just about 20 years ago.

And it fit! 🙂

I was wishing I could try on the dress I wore to the junior prom, my junior year, when I went with Real Man, however, that dress was Michaela’s and I gave it back after the prom.  If I still had it, I might have worn it tonight when we go out to dinner for Valentine’s Day.  Okay, I wouldn’t.  But, it’s fun to think that I might have been able to!

So, that’s it.

No deeper meaning in this post.

No cute stories about monkeys (except for the fact that Baby Monkey decided to be my “date” in the pictures, and kept kissing my hand like I was a princess) in this post.

Just me and my ego.

Almost not enough room for the both of us in those pictures, huh?

I Made my Choices

You may remember that a few days ago, I asked for recommendations for television shows that you think I should watch as I recover from my sinus surgery next week.

I also posted the question on Facebook and wound up with 32 responses.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many responses on Facebook.  Who knew so many of us were loving tv shows?

So, I took the feedback from Facebook and the blog and have made my decision.

First of all, Criminal Minds came up a few times, and let me say that I already watch it and love it.

My friend Ashley recommended Lost and said I need to give it a try, so I am reassuring her that I’ve watched all the seasons and although this season is giving me a headache, I’m still in the game.

I watch Leverage on and off and have enjoyed it, but I think I’ve seen enough to not need to order the entire season.

The shows I’ve gone ahead and listed in my Netflix queue, and are set to arrive tomorrow, are: Battlestar Galactica, Burn Notice,  and Firefly.

Battlestar Galactica: I’m a sucker for SciFi and have pretty much never met a Sci Fi movie or show that I haven’t loved.  So, I’m willing to give this a shot.

Burn Notice:  I’ve seen a few episodes of this show and love it.  I’m a big fan of Bruce Campbell, who used to be on Xena: Warrior Princess, one of my all-time favorite shows.  Say what you want.  I’m not ashamed.

Firefly:  See the explanation for Battlestar Galactica.

If I’m still down for the count and have made my way through all of these, I’m going for Chuck and Arrested Development next, to bring a little levity to the table.

All of this being said, what I’m really hoping is that my nose doesn’t hurt too much to rest my glasses on so that I can read.  I can listen to the tv without my glasses, but reading doesn’t quite happen without them.  Unless, of course, I get some books on CD.

But that would be a whole different post.

Four Years Ago…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 9:40 pm

Four years ago, last night, I was at my friend, Tara’s house.

It was a Friday night and I had just completed my last day of work before my maternity leave.

We were watching teen dance movies to gear up for our full-day play rehearsal the next day.

I was gearing up to get my 9 month pregnant self off the couch and go home, when Tara’s husband, Scott, asked if I had ever seen The Family Guy.  I hadn’t.

So, they showed me what they considered to be one of the funniest episodes.  The one that starts with the guys having an ipecac swallowing contest, where they all puke all over each other.

Juvenile.

Disgusting.

One of the freaking funniest things I’ve ever seen.

I laughed so hard, I couldn’t breathe.  I almost peed.  I didn’t.  But, almost.

An hour later, at my house, my water broke.

I never actually went into labor, but with the broken water, they needed to get the baby out.

After two c-sections, we went for the third, and a few hours later, we met Baby Monkey.

Unfortunately, I have no photos to share of Baby Monkey at his babiest.

All of his photos were on the computer which crashed, taking them all with it.

But, here he is at about 6 months old.

Dear God.

Look at him.

He wasn’t always this happy.

When he was brand new, until he was about three months old, he was a crier.

Not all the time.

Just from 10:17 pm through 1:49 am.

Every. Single. Night.

We had to stand and bounce him in a particular V-shaped bounce to settle him, and if you deviated from the pattern…Lord help you.

But, he grew.

He continues to grow.

He is 100% his own little person.

He’s ridiculously laid back.

He’s a chatterbox.

He’s hysterical.

He’s snuggly.

He’s my baby.

And today, he turned four.

He blew out his candles.

He opened his presents.

Tomorrow?

He’ll look a little bigger, be a little taller, and be that much closer to 5.

Oh, my baby.

Snowmaggedon

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 7:58 pm
Tags: , , ,

Okay, I almost didn’t make that the title because it is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.

Comparing a snow storm (one that isn’t even that bad) to the end of the world is nonsense.

Yet…

I can’t stop saying it.

Snowmaggedon.

It makes me giggle.

Say it with me.

Snowmaggedon.

It makes you giggle, too, right?

You don’t have to say it.  I know it does.

So, as the world came to an end, outside, pounded by the softly drifting snow, the monkeys and I enjoyed a perfectly fabulous snow day.

There was hot chocolate, movies, and birthday cake baking.

There was also some playing in the snow.

It had stopped snowing for a while, and I had asked the monkeys if they wanted to go play outside.

They weren’t quite ready, yet.

However, once the snow started again and turned into what I would almost call “blizzard-like conditions,” they decided it was time to go outside.

Snow fun was always my favorite fun as a kid, so I bundled them up and sent them out.

As they walked into the driving snow I called, “If it gets so bad you can’t see each other, it’s time to come back in!”

Then, I toyed with the idea of tying them all together with a rope like they did in the episode of Little House on the Prairie where there was the terrible storm in Walnut Grove, and then again, when the students from the blind school had to get through a storm (but I think that might have been a dust storm).

I decided to take our chances.

Instead, I took pictures of the snow.

Here’s the deck.  No hockey today.

We also decided to have lunch in the kitchen and not on the deck.

Maybe some barbeque for dinner?

Then again, maybe not.

The view of the woods was beautiful.

At one point, the monkeys called me to look because they had cleaned off the van.

However, by the time I walked down the five stairs to the front door, it was pretty well covered again.

The guy across the street used his snow blower seven times.  I kid you not…seven times throughout the day.

Didn’t make a dent.

The monkeys came in after not too long in the snow.

They don’t have the snow constitution of their old mom.

Or, at least the snow constitution that their old mom had when she was their age.

I’d play in the snow until I turned blue.

So, they came inside, peeled off the wet clothes, put on some dry ones and snuggled under a blanket for a movie.

They took baths and got on their jammies after the movie, we ate dinner, and I was just about to start our bedtime routine when the calls came.

Snowmaggedon has taken another victim.

No school tomorrow.

Two snow days in a row?

Unheard of!

However, I’m sure we’ll find a way to pass the time.

Good Days

February is always a crazy month around here, and it’s not just due to birthday madness.

In February, we rehearse for the play until 5:00 each day, which means that we all have to be super-organized, or else we’ll lose our minds.

This past Monday was a particularly long day, as I had play rehearsal, then I went to tutor.  After that, Monkey Girl and I picked up Baby Monkey, ran home to pick up Monkey in the Middle’s basketball shirt, then went to his school, where he was in after care, and got him dressed just in time for his practice to start.  (Practice is held at his school.)

A few minutes in, Real Man arrived, and we chatted for a bit, then I left while he stayed, to run to Walmart to pick up Baby Monkey’s birthday present.

I’ve had the shopping done for the big kids for awhile, but he’s a little harder to shop for.

When I was done shopping, I called Real Man from the car and said I was leaving and he told me that practice was just ending.  We quickly devised a plan and agreed to meet.

So, Real Man clipped the monkeys in their seats and started out of the school driveway.  He pretended to take a wrong turn, and continued to pretend to take wrong turns until (fabulous timing) we both pulled into the Wendy’s parking lot at the same time.

The kids nearly lost their minds.  We haven’t taken them out to eat in a long, long time, however we still have the gift cards to Wendy’s that my parents got us for Christmas.

We found a table in a back corner, got our orders and sat and ate and laughed.

We caught up on everyone’ s day, talked about our plans for the rest of the week, discussed superstitions that might help us have a snow day on Wednesday (jammies inside out and backwards) and just enjoyed each other.

I sat back and looked at them all and my heart just swelled.

With these monkeys in my life…it’s always a good day to be me.
