What I Really Do

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 6:00 am

One of the hats I wear is choral director of the spring musical.

My job is to teach all of the students each song in the play and rehearse it with them over and over and over again until they finally have it down.

Or, at least, I thought that’s what my job was.

We have an amazing photographer, Ted, who takes photos during our rehearsals and then shares them with us.

Based on these photos, I’m thinking that perhaps I do something quite different than what I thought I was doing.

For example, apparently I spent a good portion of the time imitating a big mouth bass.

I also seem to try to intimidate people with my “Oh really? Β You think so?” stare.

When I’m not doing either of those two things, I’m busy

a) inspiring people by telling them they are doing a great job

b) giving the cast a review of the film “Sweet Home Alabama”

c) going back to my science teacher days and giving a lecture on the evolution of the opposable thumb

I am also consistently busy playing Candy Crush taking copious notes on the sets.

Or, when all else fails, I just spend my time being awesome.

I kid, of course.

It’s a freaking ton of work, but it’s worth every single second.

We did “Annie” this year and it was incredible.

The kids brought tears to my eyes and there wasn’t a person in the sold out audience who didn’t walk away feeling like they had gotten more than their money’s worth.

Nine more months and I’ll be right back in the fray again.

Until then…

…I’ll dream of “Hard-Knock Life” …for the fifty billionth time.

  2. Love the pictures! Similar to your role as a teacher, you may not fully understand the depth of the positive impact you’ve made on these kids until years from now. I hope you know what can awesome experience you’re providing to so many kids as well as the community.

Thank you and sorry we couldn’t make it up to see it.

    Deep Peace

    • Aw, thanks, Jenny! What’s funny is that she actually resembles Real Man much more than she does me, but our coloring and glasses make us look similar! She’s my sweetie, so I’m just fine with that!

  6. This post made me laugh out loud. First, because that “oh, really?” face is pure Ellin looking at junior high me; second, because I feel your pain on the bass photos. Every time I get pictures back from an event where I’ve spoken, I am rocking a hybrid of “bitter beer” face and “do you smell that?” Love it!

    • I’ve been seeing more and more of my mother every single time I look in the mirror, Mark, so I think I’d have to agree with you. There were some “do you smell that” photos, as well…they didn’t make the cut. Can’t imagine why. πŸ™‚

    • Thanks, Meredith…it is SO much fun. We laugh more during play season than during the whole rest of the year. Well, except for the 8th grade trip to DC! πŸ™‚
