What are They Doing???

So, on Friday, we went out to dinner at Friendly’s.

Monkey in the Middle came home with a fantastic report card on his last day of school, and so we decided to take him out to dinner to celebrate.

It was absolutely, 100%, completely not because I didn’t want to cook.

Really.

It wasn’t.

Anyway…

…when we go out to eat, we usually play telephone around the table.

You know the game.

Someone whispers something in one person’s ear, then they pass it on until you get to the last person and see if they get the same message as the one that was started.

So, on Friday night, we played.

Well, four of us played.

Monkey Girl had spent her afternoon creating a notebook of schoolwork to do over the summer.

Yes, you read that right.

Friday was her second to last day of school, and she spent the afternoon creating a notebook of schoolwork to do.

Don’t get me wrong…

…She’ll spend her summer at the pool, at the beach, at the park, collecting fireflies, playing in the stream…

…but, she’ll also do that workbook.

Why?

I have no idea why, but somehow, she really loves schoolwork.

Fine by me, as long as she realizes that no one expects her to do it.

Anyway, so, we’re playing telephone, as always, and I start wondering what people must think as they are watching us.

Because, people are always watching us.

First of all, there are 5 of us.

Secondly, we’re not quiet.

I tried to be a quiet family for awhile, and then I realized that it just wasn’t who we are.

We live large.  We live loud.

I’m a huge people watcher and am always trying to figure out the dynamic between people.

So, what do people think we’re doing?

Telling secrets?

Quietly chastising the children?

Trying to quietly figure out the tip?

Who knows?

Maybe one day I’ll ask one of the starers “Whatcha lookin’ at?”

For now, I’ll just whisper sweet nothing in Baby Monkey’s ear and listen to him repeat it out loud.

Completely wrong.

Special Treat

Real Man had a “work dinner” tonight, and so the monkeys and I were on our own.

My first instinct was to pick up wonton soup and rice, because they love it so.

Then, I thought, “You know, these kids are AWESOME.  I think I should give them a real treat.”

So, to Friendly’s we went.

Needless to say, they were beyond thrilled.

I thought I ordered Monkey in the Middle a lemonade. (Yep…I went all out…I didn’t even make them drink milk, like I usually do)

However, looking at this picture, I’m not so sure lemonade is what was in his cup.

As always, the monkeys always cover the spread, in whatever they do.

Baby Monkey ordered this:

Monkey in the Middle ordered this:

Monkey Girl, ever the mediator, ordered this:

Me?

What did I order?

Yeah, that’s right.

I had a plate full of mini-mozzarella sticks.

So what?

For dessert, they each had sundaes.

I didn’t have enough time to get my iPhone out to get a picture of their desserts before they were gone.

My dessert, however, was the Reese’s Pieces Sundae.

I was seriously considering the seven scoop Reese’s Pieces Sundae.

I can polish it off.

Ask Kim.

She can tell you.

However, in the interest of not setting a horrible eating example for the monkeys, I went with the three scooper.

And polished that off.

The monkeys were SO well-behaved and we had a wonderful time, just chatting about our days.

The boys made me laugh.

Apparently, they’ve been paying attention to all of the Food Network shows, because they did a little cooking show while we ate.

Hmmm…maybe they’ve just been listening to me in the kitchen.

Although, they had a cute little psuedo-Italian accent like Giada.

Monkey Girl asked if she could please, please, please bring her book, The Titan’s Curse inside, because she knows we don’t read at the table, but she only had four more pages to go.

I said yes.

Who am I to get between a girl and her book?

When she finished, she joined right in on the fun.

We missed Real Man.

I took pictures and e-mailed them to him on his cell.

Yet, it was a great time, and those monkeys deserved the treat.

Come to think of it, so did I!

Sick

I am sick. Sick, sick, sick. Sick to the point of not wanting to lift my head off the pillow.

It’s a cold that has been fermenting all week, and has finally exploded. I saw the doctor yesterday and she told me to lay low and come back Wednesday.

I tell you this story not to garner sympathy, but to explain my lack of a fascinating post today. I’ve spoiled you with my fascinating life and today, I got nothing.

Okay, maybe I’ve got a little something.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m sick, I don’t want to eat. I can’t breathe through my nose, so it’s hard to eat, so I’d just rather not. Instead, I dream about what I’ll eat when I feel better.

And right now, what I’m focusing on is a Friendly’s Reeses Pieces Sundae.

Not the two scooper that they give you with your dinner.

reeses

(This is a picture of the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup sundae…not the Reeses Pieces, but it’s the same idea, except take out the Peanut Butter cup and add Reeses Pieces)

I mean the huge, honkin’ six scooper. Those of you who live in an area with a Friendly’s know what I’m talking about. Those of you who don’t, let me share.

Six scoops of ice cream…three of vanilla and three of chocolate smothered in hot peanut butter sauce, hot fudge, whipped cream, Reeses Pieces and a cherry on top. It is to die for. Seriously. To die for.  It’s so dangerous, I can’t even find a picture of it online.

Sounds enormous, but you can ask Real Man or my friend, Kim, I laugh in the face of a six scoop ice cream sundae.  I’ve eaten plenty in my day.  Not in the past few years, but I think I could totally put my game face on and do some damage.

They used to make a tiny version “to-go.”

However, they don’t seem to make it anymore. Grrr…

Because, really, as icky as I feel, I might have just put on my puppy dog face and seen if I could convince Real Man to run out and pick one up for me.

Oh, and so you don’t feel cheated by not having any “Monkey-talk” today, I thought I’d share a picture with you.

We ran over to my parents house yesterday, as my Dad’s tv has broken and he wanted Real Man to take a look at it.

While there, I lounged on the couch and Baby Monkey wandered in to see what was up. We all (except for Real Man) got our flu shots this morning (not why I’m sick…I was sick way before, so let’s not get into a flu shot debate, here), and Baby Monkey always gets knocked for a bit of a loop the day he gets a shot. So, he crawled up on my lap and fell fast asleep.

So, you can see that Baby Monkey shares Monkey in the Middle’s penchant for falling asleep anytime, anywhere.

mattsleep

And so, I hope you’ve enjoyed your Monkey Fix for the day.

As for me, I’m going back to bed.
