The Sugar Files

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 6:00 am

We all try to feed our kids good healthy food.

We all also realize that there is a balance and that everything is okay…in moderation.

However, one area I won’t compromise on is breakfast.

As a teacher, I can tell you with 100% certainty that what you feed your children before they go to school absolutely matters.

So, we don’t have sugar cereals in the house.

There are a few exceptions: winter break and spring break and every now and then in the summer

Other than that, I try to keep their brains and bodies fueled, in the morning, with healthy fare.

There really has been minimal complaining on the part of the monkeys.

At least, they haven’t said anything to me directly.

Yet, on Sunday, when I sent the boys ahead of me to the cereal aisle to pick the cereal for the week, I found this as I rounded the corner of the aisle:

Yes, my boys were either praying or begging in front of the Frosted Flakes.

We left with the Apple Cinnamon Cheerios.

Compromise.

It’s a good thing.

  1. I LOVE IT! I’ve prayed for sugar before. “In the name of the frosting, and the toys, and frosted o’s.” Great anecdote, as always. Love you!!!

  2. Frosted flakes are one of the few gluten free cereals in the store aisle. There was a time when I was begging dj to eat the f.f. Those first couple of years were painful.

    • Funny how different families have different issues. FF are great for your family because of the gluten issue, but terrible for mine because of the diabetes issue. I guess the good news is that there are a gajillion cereals in the cereal aisle! πŸ™‚

  3. Growing up, my parents would only let my sister and I get sugar cereals on our three weeks of vacation down in Georgia. Our initial trip to the grocery store in Gainesville every summer was always a mad dash to the cereal eisle to see how many boxes of Cocoa Crisps, Lucky Charms, Fruit Loops, etc., we could weasel Mom & Dad into letting us dump into the cart. Once back at the lake house, we struggled to decide which box of sugar (cereal) we would to tear into first. The remaining meals of vacation went as such – cereal for breakfast, cereal for snack, cereal for lunch, cereal for snack, BBQ for dinner, cereal for snack. And the rest of the year was Cheerios & Raisin Bran – BLAH!
