Best scene in a movie (or book) ever.

I find myself thinking of it quite a lot these past few weeks.

My heart aches.

It’s long, but if you haven’t seen it, please watch it all.

  2. I’ve never been a huge fan of his acting (Matthew McConaughey), but to me this scene isn’t about his acting. It’s much deeper than that. As a parent and citizen, I don’t understand how to break the bond of racism that still permeates our culture. We’re teaching our kids to be kind and treat others as we want to be treated, but the sad reality is our influence on our children gets less as they get older.

There’s part of me that says look how far this country has come since mid 60’s. In 45 years, we’ve gone from a civil rights movement to electing the first African American president. It seems like we’ve come so far. Then I see what happened in Pasadena ( http://www.scpr.org/news/2012/03/28/31814/oversight-group-investigating-pasadena-shooting-un/ ) this week or Trayvon Martin and I realize there is still so much anger and racism all around us.

This isn’t something we can hope goes away, but I don’t know what to do.

    • I don’t know what to do, either. When I first read the scene, in the book, it was so powerful. Then, when they made the movie, I wasn’t sure they could it justice. But, (although I’m not a huge fan of his acting, either) I think they did.

I don’t know what to do, either, Jeff. There’s a long road ahead of us all.

  3. Until everyone learns to NOT be afraid of differences, things will never change. That seems to be at the crux of so much pain on so many levels. What we don’t know or comprehend instills a fear that is out of line with living a peaceful life.

    • “out of line with living a peaceful life” I like that phrase, Carla.
