Adventuring

Let me share with you our latest acquisition from the world outside our door.

Nice, huh?

It’s funny…

In the old house, we had miles and miles of woods behind our house, but we never found this kind of stuff.

Here, it’s house after house after house, with little pieces of woods in between (and the farm behind us, but it’s not a working farm) and yet, every time we turn around there is some part of an animal in our front yard or driveway.

Hopefully it’s not some supernatural warning to our family, like we’re living in a house built on an ancient Indian burial ground, or a pet cemetery (although we are pretty sure there is a cat or two buried in the backyard, whose ghost walks around the house, from time to time).

The kids are pretty hyped about the fact that this particular skull still has some teeth in it.

There have been some hypotheses floating about that it’s a plant eater because of the flat teeth, and then another child will point out that the sharper teeth (like the one in front that the plant eater fan is willfully ignoring) probably already fell out.

They’ve been guessing what type of animal it is based on head shape and size and the shape of the eye sockets.

It’s been a great find because it has absolutely sparked the creativity and thoughtfulness in the monkeys.

I’m not sure I’m interested in knowing what kind of skull it really is, because then the fun of guessing and theorizing is over.

I can’t even begin to imagine what our next adventure will bring!

  1. Holy mackerel! Looks to me like front canine teeth but actually could be mountain lion ! Let me ask Bob the biologist!

    • I’m thinking red fox. Maybe I should have put a ruler next to it for size. It’s not that big. Thank God. Cuz, my babies wouldn’t be allowed outside if it was big! 🙂

      • Bob says more than likely canine (dog) skull based in breadth of the front canine teeth. He says too big to be feline.

      • Definitely too big to be feline. However, even though a fox is neither canine or feline, I’m sticking with fox. I tell the kids it’s a dog and there will be tears! 🙂

  2. Good golly! That beast must have been huge. I’m sure your kids are loving it, because I know that would become my own children’s prized find. You going to hang on the wall? 😉

    • Uh, no. 🙂 It’s actually not that big. I’m thinking red fox…we have a lot of those running round the neighborhood. I’m more concerned with “how did it get that way?” 🙂

      • Well, I’m glad for your sake it’s not anything bigger than a fox. I guess in the pictures, I thought it looked like a huge animal, but I’m terrible with animals. Once I mistook a goat for a baby cow. Don’t say a word. I grew up in the city. 😉

  3. Maybe a coyote. Saw one running up our backyard the end of last week.

    • Ooh! A coyote! That’s a little more interesting than a fox!

  4. Wow! We live in one of those “perfect little subdivisions” that is completely over run with wild turkeys. When my son is tardy we have to blame it on a turkey traffic jam!

    • I’m always shocked by how enormous those wild turkeys are. There was a gang (yes, I considered them a gang) that lived in the woods behind our old house!

  6. Could be one of my dogs!

    • Aw, man…there’s dogs buried back there, too???

  7. Definitely a canine of some sort. Based on google search does not look like fox. http://www.chichesterinc.com/AnimalSkulls.htm. Coyote or a dog is my guess.

    • We’re now thinking maybe skunk or raccoon based on skulls we’ve seen online.

  8. I am the mom, who will scream when Simon brings something like this home someday. I love gathering objects of nature, but skulls freak me out. That is where Daddy will have to take over.

    • I have to say, it’s our first skull. Hopefully the last. 🙂
