The Ends

Now, if my father-in-law was the author of this blog, this title would suggest that this were my last post.

The end of the blog, as it were.

See, he has a habit of adding an “-s” to many commonplace words and store names.

Imagine a Jersey City accent saying, “Hey, I picked up a book at Barnes and Nobles.”

OR

“I got a great deal on those dishtowels at the Walmarts.”

It’s quite endearing and gives us much, much fodder for teasing.

However, I am the author of this blog, and I do NOT add an “-s” to anything where an “-s” does not belong.

So, to what does our title refer?

Bread.

Loaves of bread.

More specifically, the ends of a loaf of bread.

Do you have a “ends of the loaf” battle in your house?

As you can imagine, we do.

I tend to avoid the battle by making lunches at night, when the kids go to bed.

I rotate who gets the end pieces every day.

There are four of us who have sandwiches each day, which makes 8 pieces of bread a day which means that every day, someone gets an end.

I get it.

I do.

I hate the ends of bread loaves.

It’s just so…dry.

However, I take my turn, right along with the rest of them.

Baby Monkey doesn’t eat sandwiches.

I think it’s because he doesn’t want to risk an end.

I have had lunch boxes come home from school with half a sandwich left inside.

Can you guess which half?

Thought so.

Anyway, today I was just wondering if anyone else had “end of the loaf” issues, or if it was particular to our household.

My guess is that this is definitely one area where we are NOT alone.

  1. Totally have this issue. Skylar won’t touch Em, David leaves Em in the bag til they mold or are hockey pucks. Leaves Em for me or the birds. I try to limit my bread intake so as u can see the birds and landfills r full of Pew family ends! ;0)

  2. Thankfully, no issues at our house…Yet! Brian hates the ends, would throw them out if i wasn’t looking and I love them as toast so it’s win/win….we’ll have to wait and see what Declan prefers….haha, love the blogs!

  3. Why not freeze them and use for bread-crumbs or in your Thanksgiving stuffing? Have you ever tried a bread pudding? I never had til a friend made a wonderful pumpkin one the other day in a crockpot–to die for–ends and all!!!!!! This way everyone is happy :0)

  4. I turn them over & SMOTHER the end with peanut butter & they are always part of a pb&j sandwich. With the amount of pb I put on, know one would know they were an end. If they are thick enough, I slice a sliver away from the middle & use them in regular sandwiches.

Dan eats the end as soon as he opens the loaf. I think they are meant to stay in the bag until the loaf is gone – to keep the other bread fresher. We don’t make as many sandwiches as the Bozza clan, so we don’t go through a loaf in 1 day.

  5. My Grandma Ileene always said, “Yous”, instead of ‘you” in almost every sentence with the word. It was baffling to me because it just never sounded right. Now that she has been gone for 5 1/2 years, I have decided it was endearing & not strange. Wish she was here to ask me, “So how yous doing?”

  6. You can eat the ends of the loaves? I thought there were just there to keep the bread together in the bag, sort of like bookends.
